Great news from journalist Tom Brokaw — in a statement released by NBC News, the 74-year-old says his multiple myeloma, an incurable form of cancer, is now in remission:
A year ago my future was more uncertain than I cared to acknowledge but now I face the New Year with very encouraging news. The cancer is in remission and I will shortly go on a drug maintenance regimen to keep it there.
Brokaw announced his cancer diagnosis in February of 2014, then shared seven months later that the cancer was mostly gone.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. While it cannot be cured, patients can go into remission, as Brokaw has, and then go onto a drug maintenance regiment to try to hold the disease off.
Growing Bolder contributor Pat Williams, an NBA Executive, author and inspirational speaker, also shared his own multiple myeloma journey from diagnosis to remission, in an exclusive conversation with us:
Williams also launched a new initiative to not only educate people about treatment options but to raise money for a multiple myeloma center in Florida, to support research and patients in the southeast. Learn more at http://www.magiconemoretime.com.
