The look on 92-year-old Millie Martin’s face can’t adequately be described in words. Just looking at the photo, captured moments after the great-grandmother met baby Penelope, is enough to bring a smile to your face and tears to your eyes.
Reddit user Scott Martin posted the photo of the meeting, just two days after Penelope’s birth, with the caption:
“Life comes and goes, but it’s always beautiful.”
Scott went on to share that he believes his grandmother was holding on just for this moment — it’s been a difficult few weeks for the family as a month ago, Millie’s husband Dean died.
“This was one of the best days of my life [and] I think it was up there for her, too.”
The first meeting is among the best days of most grandparents’ lives. It’s a special and compelling relationship, as documented in some of the Internet’s best videos.
In this clip, watch as a man celebrates in private — or so he thinks — after getting the news that a new grandchild is on the way.
Here, Larry meets his first grandchild in an emotional and touching moment:
And this one will make you laugh — Granny Grumbledore, as she is now called, finds out that after 20 years of asking when it will happen, she is finally a grandmother.
The face of the American family is changing. Grandparents want to live close to their grandchildren, often even living under the same roof. And as they grow older, those grandchildren are being asked to be a crucial part of the decision-making process for assisted living facilities, nursing home care, etc., which gives them a unique perspective on aging.
