Doug Ulman: Set Unachievable Goals

Last Updated on October 20, 2020

Days into a long, grueling and brutal climb toward the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Doug Ulman said, “If you don’t set goals that seem unachievable, you never live life to the fullest.”

For Ulman, the trek to the top of the world’s tallest freestanding mountain was just the latest challenge he’d undertaken in life. From battling cancer three times, starting when he was still a teenager, to leading LIVESTRONG during the charity’s biggest crisis in the wake of Lance Armstrong’s fall from grace, Ulman has never been one to shy away from life’s hardships.

Ulman explains his lifelong commitment to helping others navigate cancer and his optimism about the new future of cancer care in this country. Take a look back at his 14 years of groundbreaking work at Livestrong and his exciting move to a new organization, Pelotonia, a nonprofit in Columbus, Ohio, that raises money to support cancer research at Ohio State University and cancer treatment at The James, a cutting-edge and world-renowned cancer hospital.

Plus, see why getting heartbreaking news while still in Africa showed Ulman just how important opportunities like the Survivor Summit climb are for millions of cancer survivors around the world.
